Anemia is a major complication in patient with end stage renal disease. The treatment of renal anemia with recombinent human erythropoietin(rHuEPO) represents the therpy of choice in hemodialysis patients.
I used rHuEPO 50 units/kg in 15 patients in hemodialysis for 8 weeks and got the results as follows;
1) Hemoglobin was 6.4 gm/dl before rHuEPO treatment, 8 weeks after treatment, increased to 8.6 gm/dl. Hematocrit also increased from 18.9% to 25.2% after 8 weeks treatments. Reticulicytes were 1.2% and 1.8% before and after treatments in
respectives.
2) Serum iron and ferritin were 128.3ug/dl, 1454.3ng/dl and 95.4 ug/dl 1213.5 ng/dl before and 8 weeks after treatment in respectives.
3) BUN, creatinine, Na, K and phosphorus were not changed before and after treatments.
4) Complications and side effects of rHuEPO were occlusion of A-V fistula in one patient and severe itching sensation in one patient.
Transfusion were 1.6 paints/month before treatment, but none patient needed transfusion after rHuEPO treatment.
